Best areas and neighbourhoods in Curaçao

Where you stay in Curaçao makes a real difference to your holiday. The island offers lively waterfront neighbourhoods, established beach areas, residential districts and peaceful places surrounded by nature. There is no single best location for everyone. Willemstad is a good starting point if you enjoy historic streets, restaurants and exploring on foot. Pietermaai, Punda and Otrobanda each have their own character. Jan Thiel and Mambo Beach are popular with visitors who want restaurants and beach clubs nearby. Blue Bay and Piscadera offer different ways to stay along the coast, while Westpunt, Lagun and Banda Abou put you closer to the island's western beaches and natural scenery. Not every area is equally convenient without a car, and even within one neighbourhood the exact location of your accommodation matters. Which area?

City life, restaurants and exploring on foot

Look at Punda, Pietermaai and Otrobanda in Willemstad. The historic centre has restaurants, cultural attractions and streets that are pleasant to explore on foot.

Beach clubs and a lively holiday atmosphere

Jan Thiel and Mambo Beach combine beach time with restaurants, entertainment and activities. Check the exact distance between your accommodation and the beachfront.

A coastal resort holiday

Blue Bay and Piscadera are worth comparing if you prefer accommodation in a coastal setting. The facilities and beach access depend on the property you choose.

Which parts of Willemstad are best for exploring on foot?

Willemstad is the place to consider if you want history, restaurants and city life close to your accommodation. Punda is the historic centre, with shops, markets and the Handelskade. Across the Queen Emma Bridge, Otrobanda offers historic streets, art and cultural attractions. Pietermaai is known for its restaurants, bars and boutique accommodation.

Scharloo is another historic district, recognised for its architecture and street art. These areas are part of Willemstad, but they are not identical. If walking is important, check the exact address and distance to the places you plan to visit.

Which areas are best for a beach holiday?

Jan Thiel and Mambo Beach are two well-known choices for visitors who want beach clubs, restaurants and activities nearby. Both have developed beachfront areas, although they are separate locations.

Blue Bay combines a beach setting with resort accommodation and golf. Piscadera is another coastal area with hotels and places to eat by the water. Around Spanish Water, the sheltered bay is an important part of the setting and is used for boating and water activities.

A beach area does not automatically mean every apartment or villa is within walking distance of the sea. Always check where your accommodation is located and whether beach access is included or charged separately.

Where should you stay for nature and quieter surroundings?

The western side of Curaçao is worth considering if your plans centre on natural scenery, snorkelling and exploring different beaches. Banda Abou covers a broad part of this region, while Westpunt and Lagun offer smaller coastal settings. Sint Willibrordus is another area to consider when exploring the western side.

Places such as Grote Knip, Playa Lagun and Playa Piskadó are among the attractions of this part of the island. The atmosphere and available services vary by village and accommodation, so check where you can eat, shop and access the beach.

Staying in the west can be a wonderful choice if you enjoy a slower holiday. If you expect to spend most evenings in Willemstad or Jan Thiel, remember that you will be travelling back and forth.

Do you need a car, and how should you choose your base?

Curaçao is easier to explore with a car because its beaches, towns and attractions are spread across the island. Parts of central Willemstad are walkable, and some beachfront areas have restaurants and activities close together. However, this does not mean you can conveniently walk between the island's main destinations.

If you prefer not to drive, look for accommodation close to the places you will use most and plan transfers or organised excursions for trips farther away. If you want to explore several regions independently, a rental car offers more flexibility.

You can also discover different parts of Curaçao through guided activities. Dushi Guides offers tours around the island, and guests who book with us can always ask for personal tips and free advice about the rest of their holiday.

Questions

Is Willemstad the same as Punda?

No. Willemstad is Curaçao's capital, and Punda is one of its historic districts. Otrobanda, Pietermaai and Scharloo are also part of the historic city. Each has a different atmosphere and location.

Are Jan Thiel and Mambo Beach the same area?

No. Both are established beach destinations on the eastern side of Willemstad, but they are separate areas with their own beach clubs, restaurants and accommodation. Compare their exact locations before booking.

Does staying in a beach area mean you can walk to the beach?

Not necessarily. An accommodation can be listed under a well-known beach area without being directly on the beach. Check the actual address, walking route and any access conditions before making a reservation.

Can you explore the whole island while staying in one area?

Yes. You do not need to change accommodation to visit different parts of Curaçao. A rental car or organised excursions make it possible to explore the island from one base. Consider travel time when planning several activities on opposite sides of the island.
