Street art, lived-in lanes and restored courtyards
Cross to Otrobanda for neighbourhood stories, murals and historic streets that extend well beyond the harbourfront.
Otrobanda occupies the western side of Sint Anna Bay. Start near Brionplein, then leave the waterfront to explore the smaller streets. Murals and restored buildings sit within a living neighbourhood: people work and live here, so keep doorways clear and ask before photographing residents.
Kurá Hulanda Village brings shops, restaurants and accommodation together in restored surroundings. The separately ticketed Kurá Hulanda Museum explores African heritage, the transatlantic slave trade and Caribbean history. Allow time for the museum rather than treating it as a quick passage through the village.
For stories behind the streets, the Willemstad city tour includes a guided walk in Otrobanda. You can also explore independently and finish with the view towards Handelskade.
How far is the drive from your stay?
Otrobanda developed from 1707 as Punda ran short of space. Its name means the other side. More recently, community initiatives including Kaya Kaya have contributed murals, neighbourhood improvements and cultural events.
Look around Kurá Hulanda and individual neighbourhood bars for an evening meal or drink. Netto Bar is known for its green rum. Events and music vary; check the venue rather than expecting a nightly street festival.
We’d leave the waterfront behind for a while. Otrobanda is worth a proper walk, with time to stop and hear the stories behind the murals.
