Sailing boats, mangroves and waterfront stays
Spanish Water is a sheltered inland bay in southeast Curaçao, best explored from the water or enjoyed from a waterfront terrace.
Spanish Water, locally called Spaanse Water, has winding shores, small islands, moored sailing boats and residential areas overlooking the bay. It feels different from the beach strip at Jan Thiel: the main attraction is the water itself, with marinas and activity providers spread around its edges.
Look beyond the waterfront houses and you will also find mangroves. Guided paddleboarding tours explore this quieter side of the bay, while windsurfing and other watersports use its more open sections. Sheltered does not mean windless, so choose an activity that suits your experience and the conditions.
The Spanish Water sunset sailing trip combines a passage through the bay with sailing towards the open sea. For a shorter, more active outing, the guided Spanish Water jet ski tour explores the lagoon. Check the specific departure point: the tours do not all leave from the same marina.
Staying here can mean an apartment beside the water or a house overlooking it from higher ground. Some properties offer their own waterfront facilities and views towards Tafelberg. Confirm actual water access and driving distances before booking; a view across the bay does not mean the opposite shore is close by road.
How far is the drive from your stay?
Spanish Water has a long history shaped by plantations, shipping and its sheltered bay. The Santa Barbara plantation was established in 1662, and Fort Beekenburg was built at nearby Caracas Bay in 1703 to protect access to the harbour. Over time, the surrounding area developed into a popular location for sailing, marinas and waterfront homes.
Think waterfront dinners and sunset boat trips. For beach bars and a busier evening programme, look towards nearby Jan Thiel and arrange your return transport.
We’d choose a boat trip here to appreciate the shape of the bay. If staying overnight, a terrace overlooking the water would be high on our list.
