From Carnival costumes to the traditional dress of Seú, celebrations give Curaçao a different atmosphere. Some fill the streets with music; others bring ceremonies or changed opening hours. Here is what visitors should know.

Carnival: choose your parade

The Gran Marcha is the main daytime Carnival parade, with elaborate costumes and tumba music. The farewell parade takes place in the evening before Ash Wednesday. There are also youth parades. Check the programme for your travel year: the main celebrations usually fall in February or March.

Seú: celebrating the harvest

The main Seú parade traditionally takes place on Easter Monday. Expect traditional clothing, singing and dances connected to planting and harvesting. It is a separate celebration from Carnival, with its own music and cultural roots.

Festivals beyond Carnival

Kaya Kaya brings music, art and food into the streets of Otrobanda. Other concerts and cultural events have their own programmes and ticket arrangements. Use the Curaçao Tourist Board event calendar to find ideas, then confirm details with the organiser.

Public holidays to keep in mind

Two distinctly local dates are 2 July, Flag and Anthem Day, and 10 October, Curaçao Day. Easter and Christmas also affect opening hours. A public holiday does not mean every attraction closes, but check shops, museums and services before setting off.

Plan your arrival and journey home

For a parade or street festival, check the route and road closures before choosing where to park. Allow extra travel time and arrange your return journey. Bring water and sun protection for daytime events. With children, choose a spot with shade and an easy way to leave.

FAQ

Does Carnival take place on the same dates every year?

No. The dates follow the Easter calendar and change each year. Check the full programme before booking a trip around a particular parade.

Do I need a ticket to watch a Carnival parade?

Watching from publicly accessible areas along the route is generally free. Reserved stands, hospitality packages and separate parties can require tickets. Check what your ticket includes before buying.

Are parades suitable for children?

Youth parades can be a good starting point. Consider the heat, loud music, crowds and duration. Bring hearing protection and plan breaks rather than expecting to stay for the whole parade.
