Public transport can be an affordable way to explore Curaçao. The key is choosing a route that suits your day, checking the return journey and knowing how far you must walk from the stop.

Large buses and local minibuses

Curaçao has large ABC buses, locally called konvoi, and independently operated minibuses. The main bus terminals are in Punda and Otrobanda, on opposite sides of the harbour. Check which terminal your route uses before setting off.

Plan your route with ABC

Use the ABC journey planner or ABC Curaçao app to find routes and stops. The app also offers live arrival information. Enter the correct travel date: weekday, Sunday and public holiday services can differ.

Check both directions, including your final connection home. Departure times at the terminal are not the same as arrival times at your stop. Allow a buffer when you have a booked activity or flight.

How do the minibuses work?

Look for local minibuses marked BUS and check the destination sign. Before boarding, tell the driver where you want to go and ask about the fare and drop-off point. These are separate services from ABC: confirm the route with the driver. Signal only from a safe place beside the road.

Paying for your journey

For occasional ABC trips, cash is straightforward; the operator asks passengers to bring coins. Carry small amounts in Caribbean guilders (XCG), including money for your return. Ask minibus drivers about payment before boarding rather than assuming the same fare or payment system applies.

A beach day by bus

Check the final walking distance as carefully as the bus route. A stop named after a village or beach area may be some distance from the water. Consider shade, the walk back, beach bags and the latest useful return service.

Choose one beach with a workable connection for a relaxed day. For several scattered beaches, a rental car, organised excursion or prearranged transfer gives you more control over your time.

When public transport suits your plans

The bus is worth considering when your accommodation and destination are close to stops and your schedule is flexible. Compare the whole journey: walking, waiting and connections. For a late night out, arrange your journey home before leaving rather than relying on an unconfirmed last bus.

Our advice for getting around Curaçao

If you want to see Curaçao’s beaches and explore more of the island during your stay, we always recommend renting a car. A rental car gives you the freedom to combine several places in one day and return whenever it suits you. This is particularly useful for visiting the west coast, where relying on public transport makes planning your day much more difficult. You can search for an available rental car directly at the bottom of this page.

If you prefer to discover the island as part of an organised experience, Dushi Guides also offers tours and activities in Curaçao. Guests who book through us can contact us free of charge for personal help, tips and advice about the rest of their holiday.

FAQ

How much does an ABC bus ride cost?

Budget around XCG 2 for regular city and eastern routes, or XCG 2.50 for western routes. ABC also advertises a XCG 1.50 cash fare on Sundays and public holidays. Check current fares and conditions before travelling; minibus fares are separate.

Can I take a public bus from Curaçao airport?

Yes. Hato airport lists bus stops near the terminal. Check the ABC planner for a service matching your arrival time and destination, including any connection. With heavy luggage or no suitable departure, a taxi or booked transfer may be more practical.

Can I reach Porto Mari directly by bus?

Not right to the beach entrance. Porto Mari identifies Willibrordus as the last bus stop, about 3.2 km or 2 miles away. Plan onward transport rather than assuming it is a short walk, especially in the heat.

Can I use the bus with a wheelchair or stroller?

Ask ABC about the specific service and boarding arrangements before travelling. Also check the access route to your stop and destination. For minibuses, confirm space and accessibility directly; do not assume a wheelchair can remain unfolded.
