Which kitchen?

Trying traditional Curaçaoan dishes

Choose a local kitchen and ask which dishes and sides are available that day.

An evening food stop

Look for a truk’i pan with a menu and opening hours that fit your plans.

Eating during a day out

Choose a place along your route so you can combine a meal with exploring Willemstad or the west of the island.

Which local dishes can you try?

Stobá is a stew; kabritu stobá is made with goat. Funchi is a cornmeal side dish, similar to firm polenta. Keshi yená combines cheese with a savoury filling, often chicken or other meat. For something smaller, look for a pastechi, a fried pastry with fillings such as cheese, meat or fish. These names help you recognise local dishes on a menu. Ask what is available that day and which sides come with your meal.

Where can you have a traditional local lunch?

Plasa Bieu, also called Marshe Bieu, is a food hall in Punda where you can eat local dishes. It fits naturally into a visit to Willemstad. Komedor Krioyo at Landhuis Dokterstuin serves Krioyo cuisine on the western side of the island. Choose between them according to your route. If you are looking for fruit, vegetables or groceries instead of a prepared meal, see our markets and supermarkets page.

What is a truk’i pan?

A truk’i pan is a food truck, part of Curaçao’s food culture. Many are evening stops for sandwiches, grilled meat and fries, including after a night out. The food varies by truck, so do not expect every one to serve traditional stews. Fridays Baby Truck is an example with barbecue dishes, burgers and other grilled options. Check the menu and opening hours of the truck you want to visit.

Where can you find seafood, grilled food or different cuisines?

Sea Side Terrace is an option for fish by the sea. Restaurant Playa Forti in Westpunt combines sea views with local and international dishes. Kandela is a bar and grill, while Pasawá Box Eatery brings different food outlets together in a container setting. These places broaden the choice beyond traditional local kitchens and food trucks. Look at the menu to decide whether you want a particular Curaçaoan dish or simply somewhere informal to eat.

How do you fit a food stop into your day?

Choose somewhere along your route and check that the kitchen is open when you plan to arrive. For a late meal, check the last ordering time as well as the closing time. If you want to sit down, confirm the seating arrangements; if you are taking food away, order accordingly. Compare the full meal price, including sides and drinks. Our restaurant overview offers more options for lunch and dinner.

Questions

Do truk’i pans only open at night?

Many focus on the evening and late-night hours, but each business sets its own schedule. Check the specific truck before going, especially if you want to eat earlier in the day.

Can you find vegetarian local food?

It depends on the kitchen and the dishes available. Ask about a vegetarian meal and the ingredients used in sides and sauces. A cheese filling or vegetable dish does not by itself tell you how the whole meal is prepared.
