FAQ

Are the Jan Thiel salt pans a tourist attraction?

Visitors can explore them, but expect an informal nature walk rather than an organised attraction. They are best suited to people comfortable following outdoor trails.

Where does the walk start?

Options include routes from Parke Sorsaka, also called Den Dunki, and the Jan Thiel Beach side. Choose a specific trailhead; the general salt-pan map pin is not a car entrance.

Is there an entrance fee?

The nature trails have no general admission fee. Guided walks and any separately operated parking can have their own charges.

How long is the walk?

There are several routes. One to two hours allows a shorter exploration, while a full circuit or coastal extension takes longer. Check distance before choosing.

Are there toilets and drinking water?

Do not rely on toilets, drinking-water points or refreshments along the trails. Bring sufficient water, sun protection and closed walking shoes.

Can you always see flamingos?

No. Bird numbers and locations vary with conditions. Bring binoculars and observe from existing trails without entering the salt pans.

Is the area suitable for a stroller or wheelchair?

The unpaved, uneven trails are generally unsuitable for a standard stroller or wheelchair.

Can you walk after rain?

Some paths may be muddy or flooded. Avoid crossing submerged dams or making new paths through vegetation; choose another route if necessary.
