Local plants and the stories behind Curaçao’s herbal traditions
Discover the quieter side of Curaçao at Den Paradera, the herb garden founded by Dinah Veeris. Visit for local plant knowledge, island traditions and a slower hour away from the beach.
Den Paradera is a botanical and cultural attraction in Seru Grandi. Its focus is the relationship between plants and everyday island life: traditional preparations, personal care and knowledge passed between generations. Expect a modest garden with educational displays and a shop, rather than a landscaped flower park. A guided visit can help connect the plants to their local uses and stories.
How far is the drive from your stay?
Dinah Veeris began recording older residents’ plant knowledge in 1981 and founded Den Paradera in 1991. Her work helped preserve traditions that were largely shared orally. She received the Cola Debrot cultural award in 2000 and died in September 2024; the garden remains closely associated with her legacy.
We would choose the guided visit here. The stories behind the plants are what make this stop worthwhile.
