A woodland walk to Barber’s remarkable old kapok tree
Step off the road to Westpunt and into Hofi Pastor, a small nature park beside Barber’s church. Its enormous kapok tree, tangled roots and quiet paths make this a gentle change from the beaches.
Hofi Pastor is a modest visitor attraction with a natural, sometimes overgrown character. The main reason to stop is the kapok tree and its huge buttress roots; walking paths continue through the surrounding vegetation. This is a place for looking closely at trees, birds and small details, rather than a full day of activities. Wear closed shoes for uneven ground and bring water and mosquito repellent. Ask at the entrance which paths are currently clear.

The name means priest’s orchard and reflects the garden’s connection with Barber’s Catholic parish. The former orchard developed into a nature area associated with conservation group Amigu di Tera. Its kapok is widely described as Curaçao’s oldest tree. Accounts of its age differ, so the often-repeated figure of 800 years should be treated as an estimate, not an established planting date.
